Audience profile

                                                                         Audience Profile

Here is Zac he is our main audience target as he is 18 years of age and our target audience is between 16 - 24. Super hero movies usually tailor to these ages within an audience. Zac is in his last year of high school andhe is taking a course in media, he usually spendshis free time watching movies and tv shows instad of going out and partying he prefers to watch a more fantasy/ superhero based show or movie as he finds them more interesting compared to normal shows. His favourite shows consist of te flash and arrow as they have a reation to each other and the characters within the series lie within the sae worlds and have cross overs betwen them.Zac is a more sociable person who likes to have lolng conversatoinsa about advanced topics aswell as being able to start a conversation with anyone at anytime which he considers a trait in its own right. Zac also has a very good relationship with his family and freinds rarely having any problems this is why we choose people like him for our films as he i prime example as a passionate fan of the gengre .We have specifically chosen this age group as we feel they will be most interested within our film. People of the younger ages prefer films with more action to it rather than just a normal story, ranging from special effects to costumes the audience may feel more interested within the film and what is going on within the shots as it is more engaging

Audience Research Focus Group video

Audience Research Focus group video

This is our focus group video we decided to do as we wanted to get a general idea of what an audience wants when they watch a superhero film (our genre of film) We showed them a trailer for a film and we asked a specific list of questions to understand what they like and don't like in a superhero film and what they wanted to see more within a superhero film so we decided to take the results of the test and add that towards we we were going to do for our film as we thought that it would be advantageous to us to implement what people prefer in films compared to what we would think is what people like. We conduct these types of research in order to make a best film suitable for our audience, a lot of major film studios do the same but instead of using focus groups they use market research by seeing whats popular in the film market. As we are not a major studio we have to conduct our research into focus groups allowing us to get small majority opinions on what things they like about our genre of film and what they'd like to see

Questionnaire Results

 Questionnaire Results

a
fter showing them the video we decided to question them on whether they thought a superhero has superpowers and a majority of them about 60 percent of them said that they don't need super powers as it is the person not the powers they possess

Here we asked whether they preferred their heroes to be born with their powers probably resulting in a fairly average backstory or a hero who is given their powers after a freak accident which provides a more interesting/entertaining backstory as well as one that people can get behind which the majority has chosen that a freak accident would be better

We asked if the hero should have multiple  powers adding to the depth of the character him/herself and a majority of the people preferred if the character had one as it would solely resonate with them

Here we asked whether the film should be based in a location with a high population adding to the drama raising it as life would be at risk if there was a fight between two people with powers, it was quite a split decision as some people liked the idea and some didn't creating the split vote

Here we asked whether the hero needed assistance with what they are doing or who they are fighting using technology as an advantage/ edge in their challenge. Some heroes actually need this as they don't have powers in order to help themselves. So the votes were quite split as well resulting in the non gadget heroes having a slight vote over with gadgets

here we asked whether the superhero should have been given their powers through an experiment or not, resulting in another form of backstory thickening the characters depth and story as well as motives so a majority of people voted yes as they would prefer a hero with some form of backstory

We asked here what gender they would prefer their hero to be and we got a majority vote of 65 % towards a female hero which contradicts the stern types of males as a lead role in a hero movie or a male as the hero within the main movie creating diversity within a film crowd and showing that the modern day audience has changed

we also asked if they thought the hero should be a teenager or adult changing the characters personality quite a lot as a younger hero might not have that much experience with their powers compared to heroes who do have experience with their powers likely being adults, but the vote went towards a younger hero as they are more likely to have a longer shelf life compared to older heroes

Here we asked whether they wanted the hero to be miss understood or hated by the people even if they are good creating a backlash towards the different as why do they get to be privileged and powered compared to everyone else this resulted in a resounding vote towards the hero being criticised to some form

Here we asked whether the hero should have some form of weapon they could use to either one just use or one they draw power from and we got a resounding no towards that as it would take away from the character and his actual/general power

Here as our last question we asked whether the audience preferred to have their own sidekick to help them with various activities and tasks, surprisingly more than 50 percent of the people voted towards actually having a sidekick which seemed to be quite preferred among audience members

Gender Representation analysis

Gender Representation analysis

Gender representation in movies vary to the genre and story of the movie as well as the characteristics and personalities of the characters in themselves like a villain either it be male or female can be strong, smart heartless while a hero is likely to have certain characteristics between genders while the male is quite strong in most aspects in superheros films the female is more or less based as a slightly weaker or more intellectual character. Males in most movies are seen to be the main characters/lead when it comes to more physical roles or roles you would likely associate with a man while playing as women in film may be associated with more dramatic and emotional characters within a film and its genre. A genre will always represent a gender different to the other making either the female or male more prominent in the role and how they are seen/perceived to the audience. When the audience sees a man as a leading role they expect a very stable strong role that will take control of the situation and when the audience sees a female they expect a more emotional role than a action like role instead a more vocal role that takes the situation into account. Genders in film are always taken into account when films are being cast as well as what the character needs to be

as you can tell in superhero movies the main type of character is directed towards the male while the female seems to play more of a supportive role while the males take the lead in the situation. Males are perceived in film as the more tough and serious roles while females take more of a supporting dramatic role within the movie genre we are following.

Editing analysis

Editing analysis

Editing is used in a film to form and put together a scene, editing is used in every film without it it is impossible to create a movie that works, editing can also be used to draw emotions and make a person feel a certain way by the use of adding things to the film cuts
Batman vs Superman opening scene:

As soon as the scene starts the editor has played a very slow sad tone to show that the scene is sad it cuts to a shot of two coffins being taken to a burial sight and as the crowd of people walks the camera zooms out away from them showing the scene from a further distance giving a better view of things the editor uses seamless cuts showing different perspectives of whats going on without disturbing the shot this is throughout the intro from the film jumping from different times within the timeline as two scenes are occurring at the same time as the scene progresses there is an increase of jump/quick cuts and increase of music and music speed as the film starts to become more intense and fast paced showing the severity of the scenes and whats being felt. The scenes range from very action like running music with a saddened tone to the faint sound of a person passing with a slow melodic saddening music tone while still using quick cuts and cross cutting between two scenes to form a story that the audience understands creating continuity Batman vs Superman is filled with editing ranging from the long takes to quick cuts in the movie to add fluidity to the scenes as well as to the after affects editing which adds a whole other addition to the film creating objects and environment that wouldn't be there like the bats from this scene. This is why editing is key within film

Narrative Analysis

Narrative

Equilibrium
He's a kid a school doing his studies and goes on a school trip later resulting in him being bitten by a radio active spider. This is the equilibrium as it is the subject of the matter that gives peter Parker/Spider man his powers and starts his story/journey to become a hero and later face life altering changes as well as opposition. It shows in the scenes its a equilibrium as well as it shows how the Characters back story works and how he faces the challenges ahead of him in his story giving us an idea of what happened. The scene shows that hes living a quite peaceful normal life as well showing that there is nothing wrong yet as he faces no exact problems.

\

Disruption of the equilibrium
Green goblin attacks new York parade is the disruption as Spiderman was not facing any real threats also the city, Spiderman by now has mastered most of his abilities and finding being him is quite a stable normal life but the green goblin destroying buildings and endangering many lives disrupts this normality as the Green Goblin is trying to kill people mainly Spiderman and anyone who supports him. Green Goblin also causes disruption as he is trying to find the identity of Spiderman as he is  causing trouble for him and the city on a daily basis and a mass scale

Recognition of the disruption
When they finally meet to fight is the recognition of  disruption as they finally come face to face and realise they are completely opposites and are against each others morals. They engage and see how they will be affected by each other and what aspects of their lives will change, the will be taken outside of their comfort zone and are at odds with one another. They cannot go back to living a normal life until their fued is over and the fighting is done. One of them has to loose in order to re gain that normality

An attempt to repair the damage
He attempts to repair the damage when mary jane is captured so the Green Foblin tells him where mary Jane is and he goes to find her and high Green Goblin in an attempt to save her and restore her life resulting in fixing the damage that the Green Goblin has been caused

New Equilibrium
Defeating the green goblin is the new equilibrium as the fighting has ended and Spiderman can go back to the life he once lived before that as all the disruption Green Goblin caused is over and not possible to start again until a new villain arises. so Spiderman is at ease for the moment in time as he is not fighting in a constant fear of anything happening to the ones he cares about as well as the fact the amount of crime has dropped so he is in a more stable/ peaceful situation

How we will use narrative
After the research into narrative we have decided to attempt to use this in our film, we plan to use it in our film by adapting these aspects of the narrative by disrupting and rebuilding the damaged area of  the narrative after recognising the disruption in the equilibrium and allowing their disruption to do damage and repair the damaged caused and then attempting to place in the new equilibrium into our film following a baseline narrative to hold our film

Sound Track analysis

Sound Track analysis

Batman Vs Superman

As the opening scene starts its very silent except for a voice over of how things use to be in the past and how they've changed, gotten worse. The voice describes how the world has fallen and why he has fallen. As the scene progresses we are taken back to the last place his parents were alive as they were walking into their fate as that was happening a very slow deep/dramatic tone of music starts to play from a low volume and rises up as the scene progresses. When his parents are confronted the tone slightly changes adding the use of trombones adding a sound to heighten the affect of the situation due to the fact a man is pulling a gun on a child and his parents and the sound is stressing the seriousness of what is going on. the scenes switch between what happened to the boy/Bruce's parents and what Bruce is doing during their funeral. The music picks up in speed but changes its tone to a more darker and sad tone and it deepens as his parents lives are ended in one scene and Bruce falls down a pit in the other, showing raw emotion from the soundtrack let alone the actors. When Bruce lands at the bottom of the pit the track stops and starts playing a quite violent but subtle tone in the background at a low volume as his father gasps his final words and Bruce descends into the person he is the soundtrack rises into a more darker tone showing who Bruce is becoming then changes into a much stronger one as he rises from the pit forever changing him and the person he is

Film opening analysis

film opening analysis
Flash :

For the flash it fits the genre of superhero and sci fi, as the opening scene begins you can see a red blur running across a city in a flash that appears to have human figure showing that it is defining basic law with giving people super powers showing this is a sci fi / superhero film by setting the tone that anything is possible in this show / genre

For the narrative it is actually given in the opening scene as the main character explains who he is and what is going on in his life as well as the things he's over come. It shows that the show has its own realism to it because the main character also seems to have the problems of a normal person as well as the location the film is set in a city location bringing some reality to the show

The context of the opening is set by the characters and where they are due to the opening not giving a general direction or narrative because of the way the show opens and the main character is more or less explaining his life than progresses with the story. This allows the show to set a basic tone so it can surprise the audience later on with a shift in the story.

Mad Max :

The narrative of the story is solely based on a man and his will to survive as the opening scene starts, by the looks of it  the person: Max. has been in this wasteland for a while maybe a lifetime and the effects of the life he's lived are apparent on his emotions and appearance. later on in the same scene an apparent faction appears showing that there are other people in the wasteland. people like scavengers, looters and faction members/Leaders and not all of them are friendly. the people also seemed to be affected by some sort of hereditary diseases. The story seems to follow survival of the fittest and who ever has the most numbers is the strongest.

The conventions of Mad Max are that it follows a very simple story in hindsight good vs evil, David vs Goliath. while Max is the under dog. He still seems to have a chance win the fight/story
it follows the conventions of a superhero film because it is set up to be a unknown man against the world and a faction of people who don't seem to have right of mind, they don't care about a thing or anyone they hurt.

as the scene opens you see a vast view of the desert wasteland and the figure the main character : Max. standing next to his car, as the scene progresses you see him turn back to the camera from a cut that leads to the back of his head, he's heard something and jumps into his car to leave the scene as he does that he packs his personal belongings in a hurry as he pulls out as fast as possible knowing the issues that are heading his way.The scene progresses to a short car chase soon later his car is hit by an explosive and he is taken leaving all his belongings behind

Man Of Steel:

The movie in itself folllows a linear story as it starts of in the past giving a form of memeory and idea of the character as it leads into his childhood and what happened. The opening also shows the villain Zod and his motives for why he is revolting and killing his own kind as he wants to clam superman  as his own.During the opening sequence it also shows how superman came to earth as a child, his home planet was being destroyed and the only way he could be saved was if his parent sacrificed themselves to save him by putting him in the only escape pod which led hi to crash land on earth in the middle of a farm. This shows wheres hes from, why he's on earth and what the motives are for the villain. To show how strong and capable the villain is he fights superman's dad and ends his life showing that the story is very serious and the villain is determined find superman at no cost. The entire opening shows the conventions of a superhero movie, it gives the back story the reason why the villain is pursuing superman and the reason superman is going to fight back because he is angry at the loss of his parents.

The shots used in the opening consist of mostly of mid shots and pan shots while using very dark/brown filters to add the effect of a different environment/earth as well as showing the wildlife which is non exsistant on our planet as well as the natural forming of the planet which would fall under the sci fi fantasy genre. When it comes to the dialog scenes the shots are quite slow with less cuts and as the scene is more action filled the cuts and movement of the camera increase to show effect

Film opening conventions

Film Opening Conventions

Film openings are subjective to a films genre, when it comes to our film genre/superhero movies it has a very specific type of openings that can vary either rotating around a back story or jumping straight into the action with explosive scenes, creating a certain impression within the film and creating an idea of the film to understand and anticipate what is going to happen throughout the film.
Film openings consist of either a lot of information or a lot of action, these are usually the conventions of a superhero film giving detailed descriptions of the character or story. These also use a variety of film techniques like the use of establishing shots and quick cuts to create a varying effect on the audience and give them a certain feel to the film according to what point the film is in and what feel it wants to create towards the audience members

Preliminary Task Evaluation

                                 Evaluation

As we were assigned a preliminary task, we were tasked to make a video/scene using key camera angles: shot, reverse shot while filming a conversation between two people.
During filming we suffered technical difficulties with our audio and microphone.

For our task we decided to set a scene of an interogation between a man and a woman who is suspected of murder, the scene follows a direct line of questioning such as where were at what hour and what where doing while the woman is answering as if she doesn't recall anything that has happened of the past night and current events. The story progresses as it seems that the man is set on the idea she is guilty and the woman is playing an innocent and un knowing role of what is going on.
We could have improved on how we delt with technical difficulties was well as our fumbling location and lighting as we originally could not set a place and scene without the lighting being very different as we recorded from different angles. One of our main goals is perfect our acting skills while keeping the film fluid in its visual aspects and story telling

Film Techniques

Film Techniques

Match on action

Match on action and cutting on action usually refers to film editing using techniques where an editor cuts from one shot to the other/different view in which matches the first shots action a common example being someone walking up to a door and opening swapping the shot from a person walking up to the door to them grabbing the knob of the door

Shot/Reverse shot

Shot reverse shot is a technique which is used when one character is shown looking at the other person/individual  and the other shot would be the other individual looking at the character, this shot is preferably used when characters are having a conversation in a scene or it may be used in an interrogation scene even maybe as the video clip shows having a conversation with himself in the mirror

180 Degree Rule

The cinematography rule of 180 degree rule is a guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another . When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle
